“Student outgrowing the teacher”: Former Red Bull boss Christian Horner explains how his relationship with Helmut Marko evolved over the years
Christian Horner was recommended to Dietrich Mateschitz by Helmut Marko for the Team Principal role when Red Bull took over Jaguar. However, their relationship evolved over the years, and Horner reflected on the same.
Christian Horner ran the Ardent International team in Formula 3000, where he crossed paths with Helmut Marko. Red Bull went on to sponsor Ardent, and the relationship with Horner grew. Eventually, when Red Bull took over Jaguar and stepped into F1, they signed Horner as the Team Principal.
Helmut Marko and Dietrich Mateschitz were close friends. Both had a passion for motorsports, and Marko approached the Red Bull co-founder with driver development ideas and motorsports opportunities. Before Red Bull made its debut in 2005, they needed a leader, and Marko suggested Christian Horner.
Instead of going for an established person who previously worked in F1, they signed Horner, who was just 31 years old in 2005.
However, Helmut and Christian’s relationship changed over the two decades they spent at the team. The former Red Bull Team Principal detailed the same on the Up to Speed podcast.
“Well, look, he was responsible for giving me the introduction to Dietrich and backing me up to come in. I suppose it’s that old adage of suddenly the student outgrows the teacher in that respect. And I suppose there’s always a part of you that knows not what you owe me but suddenly you know you grow within a role. I was always very respectful for what he did but sometimes he made life incredibly difficult. That’s life,” said Christian Horner
“And after Dietrich, you know, passed the function that he had essentially wasn’t there anymore. So then you get people that are sort of just hanging on. The business was moving on. It was evolving. Nothing stands still. It has to keep evolving. And so, uh, you know, dynamics change,” he added
“We don’t have one”: Christian Horner on his relationship with Helmut Marko after Red Bull exit
Christian Horner recently revealed that Helmut Marko was staying at his home as a guest just two days before he was fired by Red Bull. However, the Austrian did not indicate the same to the former Red Bull Team Principal.
Speaking with BILD, Horner was asked about his relationship with Marko, to which he replied,
“We don’t have one.”
When questioned about their last contact, he replied,
“On my last day of work at Red Bull, the two of us sat in my office, and we shook hands in the end. Since then, there has been radio silence. But that’s okay too. It struck me that he worked on my expulsion like this while my ex-partner and my daughter’s mother had passed away shortly before. He didn’t even express his condolences. That wasn’t the fine English way.” (Translated via Google)
Just months after Horner’s firing, Helmut Marko also retired at the end of the 2025 F1 season.
