Mercedes boss Toto Wolff reveals one thing he learned from Lewis Hamilton
Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff led Mercedes to eight consecutive constructors’ titles. The two were at Mercedes in the Boss-Driver role for over a decade. Wolff recently came out and revealed the one thing he learnt from Hamilton.
Lewis Hamilton is an idol for many, which includes the upcoming generation of drivers as well as some of the younger drivers in F1 like Isack Hadjar. However, the Briton isn’t just an idol for his on-track performances, but also for the kind of person that he is.
Lewis Hamilton always takes to the radio after the race and thanks the team, sending a positive message across the organisation. The Briton also owns his mistakes, like he recently did at the Singapore GP when he made the poor strategic call.
Toto Wolff, speaking at the Milken Institute Asia Summit 2026, revealed the one thing that he learnt from Lewis Hamilton. It was that if one is seeking to change a wrong way of acting, they will change.
“It’s something I learned from Lewis Hamilton, our driver. He has such a sense for perfection in a way that there is a constant feedback loop within him. How can I improve? Every single day. And we know that you can never achieve perfection because also your targets change. But he’s an adult, and he’s taught me that contrary to what we think, we are not the end product,” said Toto Wolff.
“We think, okay, we have strengths and weaknesses. We have our personality. This is how we act. We are either tyrants in our organization, or we have an embracing kind of style. And he taught me that if you realize that you have taken the wrong decisions or maybe that you have acted in the wrong way, change. And if you’re actively seeking to change, you will change. So when it comes to the leadership style, the adaptability is a moment where I had to change,” added the Mercedes Boss.
Lewis Hamilton left Mercedes ahead of the 2025 season and joined Ferrari to continue with his dream of winning his eighth F1 title.
Toto Wolff claimed Lewis Hamilton a title threat for Kimi Antonelli
Lewis Hamilton won the Barcelona GP earlier this year and became the first non-Mercedes driver to win a race this year. After the Barcelona win, Hamilton was just 41 points off Kimi Antonelli in the driver’s standings.
Toto Wolff came out and detailed that Hamilton was very much a threat to Kimi Antonelli championship.
“I’d rather not fight with him [Hamilton] for a title because I know what he’s capable of. If he smells blood, he goes. I’ve seen it many years where suddenly the Lewis Hamilton train started to go and then it’s very difficult to stop it.”
However, Ferrari failed to continue their rate of performance upgrades. With McLaren and Red Bull catching up, and just six races left in the season, Hamilton title hopes are possibly over. He’s currently 111 points behind Antonelli in the championship.
