Christian Horner’s friend reveals the real story behind his viral admiration for Ferrari in the interview
Martin Brundle has revealed that Christian Horner’s public admiration of Ferrari in a recently published interview was just the former team boss being polite and nothing more. The former Red Bull team boss kicked up a storm when his comments surfaced in the media, where he admitted that if there’s one team that he’d love to be a team boss at without acquiring a stake, it is Ferrari.
The remark led to speculation around the future of the current Ferrari team boss, Fred Vasseur, as reports suggested that the Frenchman was already on shaky ground. This is also not the first time that Fred’s position within the team has been under the microscope.
Ahead of the F1 Canadian GP last season, there were reports that the Italian team was looking to replace the Frenchman. At the time, he had very strong support from both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, as the duo came out in his support. This time around, Ferrari did a mini conference to end all speculation around Fred Vasseur’s future.
Talking about the entire speculation around Christian Horner’s remarks, F1 pundit and the former Red Bull man’s close friend Martin Brundle revealed that he had a chat with the Brit about the same, and the story was somewhat different.
According to Brundle, Christian Horner told him that he was just being polite when asked about a future with Ferrari, and the quote ended up taking a life of its own. On the Sky Sports broadcast, Brundle said,
“Being a Ferrari driver or the Ferrari team principal is the best and worst job in F1 all at the same time because of the pressure and the hero-zero curve is sometimes vertical as to whether you are amazing or useless. You have to navigate your way through that.”
He added,
“There was a lot of talk of Christian Horner this week, so I rang him, and he said, ‘I was being polite and respectful about Ferrari in an interview and it took on a whole load.'”
Brundle on Christian Horner potentially joining Ferrari
If Christian Horner does end up moving to Ferrari, he would also eventually be working with Lewis Hamilton at the same team. That’s a situation which Brundle questioned would be the most harmonious.
Given the history of the duo often ending up on the other side of the battle, Brundle questioned if such a thing would work, and maybe the best course of action is continuing with the current structure. He said,
“I mean, could you imagine Lewis and Christian working together after 2021? That would be an interesting dynamic. There’s no point in keeping changing key personnel; you see it in football.”
Brundle added.
“The role of a team principal has also changed quite dramatically. They just need to stay calm and support each other.”
The clarification should quell some of the “Christian Horner to Ferrari” rumors as the team tries to build a more stable environment for everyone
