After a Monaco Grand Prix which saw both of the team’s drivers finish outside of the points,Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has shared his outlook on the rest of the season, stating that despite poor results recently, the organization is still constantly developing and improving. Wolff shared that with a majority of the season still remaining, the team is looking forward to having the opportunity on performing better, and with plans on bringing a new front wing to the next Grand Prix, there is a definite excitement that will come along with it.
At the Imola Grand Prix, George Russell secured a P7 finish which was his lowest finish of the season. Eventually, that was surpassed last weekend in Monaco. His car lost power that forced him start the event only 14th on the grid. He managed to come home with a finish of P11. Meanwhile, his teammate Kimi Antonelli DNF’d in Imola. He followed it up with another weak outing in his maiden Monaco GP. The Mercedes man crashed in qualifying and started P15. He crossed the line in 18th place, which was last thanks to the DNFs of Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso. Looking at the past two races, the Mercedes team boss gives assurances that things will be getting better from this next weekend.
“With 16 races left, there is a long way to go,” Wolff says.
“The team is still pushing to find performance and this weekend’s updated front wing technical directive will provide another level of intrigue.
“We are focused on ourselves though and looking forward to having the opportunity to do a better job than we have done at the last two races.” [via Mercedes]
Despite the challenging past two Grand Prixes, Mercedes currently sit in P2 in the constructors’ championship. However, they are only four and five points ahead of Red Bull and Ferrari respectively.
Mercedes team boss calls upcoming Spanish GP a “a good test of a car”
The Mercedes team principal also shared the team’s enthusiasm heading into the Spanish Grand Prix, which takes place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona this weekend. Toto Wolff explained how the circuit acts as a suitable testing ground for their challenger thanks to it’s layout, and with the team bringing in a new front wing, the three days in Barcelona will give the Brackley-based outfit a good understanding on where they stand for the season ahead.
“We will be looking to get back on track in Barcelona this weekend,” says Toto.
“It is a circuit that provides a good test of a car, with a mixture of low, medium, and high-speed corners.
“That will be useful for assessing our recent updates and our position relative to our competitors as we move into the second third of the season.” [via Mercedes]
The Spanish Grand Prix will take place from May 30th to June 1st.
