Mercedes Team Principal & CEO Toto Wolff came from humble beginnings and, according to Forbes, is now worth $1.8 billion (€1.6 billion). Unlike so many others in the sport, Wolff was never interested in racing as a child. With an education in finance and economics, the Austrian started his own investment firm. Combining his interest in racing with his aptitude for investment, he bought a stake in the Williams team. Soon after, he was asked to join the Mercedes outfit and the rest is history.
What is the family background of Toto Wolff?
Toto Wolff, whose full name is Torger Christian Wolff, was born on January 12, 1972, in Vienna, Austria. Tragedy struck Wolff when he was 15 years old and his father passed away due to cancer. Wolff admitted that losing his father was a huge blow to his family and caused a lot of financial struggle. His mother, a physician struggled to make ends meet.
“He was terminally ill for ten years, so basically all throughout my childhood. And the financial hardship was related to this. That had the biggest impact on me as a person.”

This has acted as a huge motivating factor in the Austrian’s life.
The brief career in racing of Toto Wolff
At the age of 17, Wolff visited the Nurburgring, where his friend, Philipp Peter was participating in the German Formula 3 championship. The experience kick started Wolff’s obsession with racing.
“From the moment I came into the paddock, looking around the cars, being on the grid, I caught the bug,” Wolff admitted.
Toto Wolff competed in the Austrian Formula Ford and scored a class win at the 1994 Nürburgring 24 Hours. He would continue racing for three more years before heading to the Vienna University of Economics and Business. From 2001 to 2004, Toto entered the FIA GT Championship. His best finish in the standings was P6. He also raced in the Italian GT Championship.
In 2006, he secured a victory at the 24 Hours of Bahrain, marking Wolff’s final year as a racer. Unfortunately, he had to cut short his racing career due to financial restraints.
“I ran out of money. A sponsor stopped financing after the Senna and Wendlinger incidents in 1994, and this is why I stopped all my racing activities.” [Quotes via Mercedes]
