Sebastian Vettel emerges as Helmut Marko’s potential successor but Red Bull insider warns of major challenge

Sebastian could replace Helmut Marko at Red Bull.

Sebastian Vettel has emerged as the favorite to be Helmut Marko’s successor at Red Bull Racing. But former Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley feels that replacing the Austrian is almost an impossible task. The Briton also hopes to see the 82-year-old in the paddock for much longer.

Sebastian Vettel recently confirmed that he has had casual talks with Helmut Marko about potentially succeeding him at Red Bull. Many F1 fans and experts have expressed their approval for this potential move.

But Jonathan Wheatley feels otherwise. The Briton left the Red Bull ranks in 2024 to take up the role of team principal at Sauber, as they begin their transition into Audi.

Having spent almost two decades at the Austrian team though, Wheatley has a clear idea of Marko’s influence within the Red Bull setup.

Speaking during the team principal’s press conference ahead of the Austrian GP, Wheatley shared the biggest challenge any person would face in replacing Helmut Marko.

“Firstly, I think replacing Helmut will be a significant challenge in itself. I can’t imagine how one person could do that,” said Wheatley. [via GPBlog]

“I haven’t seen Sebastian for a while. He is, of course, an impressive individual as you all know.

‘’I believe the talks between the two parties have been confirmed, but whether it really leads to something, I don’t know. However, I hope to see Helmut in that role for much longer.’’ he added.

Helmut Marko’s biggest role at Red Bull is spearheading the junior program. But the 82-year-old is also a senior advisor within the F1 setup.

What Sebastian Vettel said about replacing Helmut Marko at Red Bull

Sebastian Vettel has confirmed having held talks with Helmut Marko about potentially succeeding him in the near future. Marko has previously claimed that he cannot do his current role forever, as he turned 82 this year.

Speaking on ORF TV’s “Sport am Sonntag” podcast, Vettel revealed that he has already held casual talks with Helmut Marko regarding a succession plan.

“There have been a few headlines recently. I still get along great with Helmut, and we’re in contact regarding the topic,” said Vettel.

“[Talks are] not yet that intensive or in-depth, it’s perhaps something that could play a role. In what form remains to be seen.” he added.

Vettel is still well respected within the Red Bull setup. He still has a good relationship with Helmut Marko and Christian Horner, even after having left the team in 2014. Even Max Verstappen recently claimed that there will always be a place for Vettel within the Austrian team.

During his time at the team, Vettel won all of his four drivers’ championships in consecutive years. He also helped Red Bull claim as many constructors’ titles from 2010 to 2013, with support from his teammate Mark Webber.
