Oscar Piastri is taking over F1 in 2025. The Aussie driver has dominated the early stages of the season and leads the championship after 10 rounds. If McLaren’s dominance continues throughout the season, he is surely the favorite to win his maiden title this year. Given his rapid rise, questions arise about whether the Papaya team has secured him for the future. So how long is Piastri’s current deal with McLaren?
Oscar Piastri’s contract at McLaren
Oscar Piastri joined McLaren in 2023 on a multi-year contract. This happened after Alpine had officially announced that the Aussie would be driving for them in 2023. Piastri denied this via his social media and joined McLaren a few weeks later.
After just 15 races in that season, the British team extended his contract to run up until the 2026 season. This means next season would have been the final year of his McLaren contract. But coming into the current season, Piastri signed a multi-year contract extension to remain at the Woking-based team for the foreseeable future.
The exact length of his newest contract is unknown. But the driver is expected to have signed a deal running through to at least 2028.
McLaren placed their trust in Piastri as a rookie in 2023. His original contract reflected this. The Alpine junior was originally placed on a $775,000 [€672,000] annual salary. But with the new contract, Piastri has reportedly jumped up to $20 Million [€17 Million] a year.
Oscar Piastri claimed he was “excited to fight for the big prizes” after McLaren’s contract extension
Oscar Piastri had claimed that he was “excited to fight for the big prizes” at McLaren, after extending his contract in March. The 24-year-old also expressed he was hungry to continue fighting at the top of the field in 2025.
Piastri was a big part of McLaren’s efforts of winning the 2024 Constructors’ championship. He also claimed two race victories last year and earned the contract extension.
“There are so many talented and special people working at MTC who have helped me to become a Formula 1 race winner very early in my career. Therefore, I’m very proud to be continuing to represent this legendary team for many years to come,” said Piastri [via F1.com]
“I’m excited to fight for the big prizes as a McLaren driver and after last year’s fantastic achievements, it has made me even hungrier to stay at the sharp end,” he added.
Piastri is now competing for the biggest prize of all, the drivers’ world title. He aided Lando Norris in his championship bid towards the end of the season in 2024. But this year, it is the Aussie who has led the championship, with Norris lagging behind in P2. Piastri has won five races and leads his teammate by 22 points in the drivers’ standings.
