Australian driver Oscar Piastri marked his F1 debut in 2023 with McLaren. After winding up the Constructors’ Championship for the team last year, he has made himself a strong contender for the Drivers’ Championship in 2025.
He has already won five races this season and is running a strong campaign against his competitors, including his McLaren teammate Lando Norris. The Aussie’s two victories last year and an additional six podiums earned him enough credit at McLaren. This yielded in him earning an improved multi-year contract extension.
Earlier this March, the team announced his extension. In the statement, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown said:
“It’s fantastic to confirm Oscar’s extension with McLaren. Not only is he an incredibly talented driver, but his work ethic and cultural fit within the team made it a no-brainer to extend his time in Papaya.”
“We’ve got the best driver line-up on the grid, and in the past two seasons, we’ve seen how much of an asset to the team Oscar is both on and off track.”
It’s apparent that the team has a very strong driver lineup. Considering the car’s pace, they have a chance to clinch another championship this year. But just how long will this partnership between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris go on for?
Just how long is the multi-year contract for Oscar Piastri?
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri helped McLaren secure the Constructors’ Championship in 2024 for the first time in decades. Their current driver lineup has shown immense competitiveness against others on the grid.
Oscar Piastri’s “multi-year” extension will reportedly last at least until the end of the 2028 season. As per PlanetF1, he is set to be paid $25.9 million (€23.7 million) per season. His contract will run two years into the new regulations that will come in effect next year. But, it is tough to predict if the Woking-based outfit will remain dominant.
If the current results were to continue for the rest of the season, Oscar Piastri could easily clinch his first World Championship. His driving has been impeccable, considering he has been in battles with the most experienced drivers on the grid. Furthermore, his consistent finishes have helped him extend his lead in the championship table.
While his current contract is set to last him at least until the 2028 season, the team might give Oscar Piastri another extension. However, it will also depend on the team’s performance among other factors. There could be others who could offer him a better contract, and he might consider moving. For now, he continues his third consecutive season with the Papaya team.
