Mick Schumacher made his F1 debut with Haas in the 2021 season, right after winning the Formula 2 Championship a year earlier. He was thought to be a promising driver, being the son of the F1 legend Michael Schumacher, however, his first season on the grid did not yield positive results.
Haas suffered that season with an uncompetitive car, finishing without any points. 2022 was much better for the team and Schumacher. The German driver managed to score points, however, Haas decided to part ways with Schumacher, leaving him without a seat for the 2023 season. Mercedes signed him as their reserve driver, but he did not get the opportunity to participate in a race.
While he maintained his presence on the F1 Paddock with Mercedes, it was seemingly tough for Mick Schumacher to get a full-time seat. But opportunities loomed for him outside of open-wheel racing, in the World Endurance Championship.
What is Mick Schumacher doing now? Roles in the WEC
French outfit Alpine announced their WEC Hypercar debut for the 2024 season and signed Schumacher as one of their drivers. He teamed up with Nicolas Lapierre, Paul-Loup Chatin, and others. While the team’s first season wasn’t very competitive, they did manage to get on the podium in Fuji.
Heading into the 2025 season, Mercedes announced that Schumacher would part ways with the team, ending his reserve driver role. This was for him to focus more on Alpine’s WEC project, where he has since continued. The team has been performing much better this year, managing two consecutive podiums in three races so far in the season.
Reflecting on his first podium finish earlier this year in Imola, Schumacher said (via MotorsportWeek):
“The most important thing is to bring back good results and our strategy was key today, with a little help from a few incidents out front,” Mick Schumacher said. “We managed to pull off something we didn’t believe quite possible at the start and we can be proud of our progress so far. Let’s keep working hard to build on this momentum at Spa and Le Mans.”
The team then managed another P3 finish at Spa.
Is an F1 return possible for Schumacher in the future?
Schumacher was thought to have a positive chance of making it back on the grid full-time when Mercedes signed him as their reserve driver. However, that did not make a major difference to his situation in the sport.
After Alpine signed him for the WEC entry, it was once again thought that the French outfit would give him an opportunity. But they clarified that WEC was a different operation and he wouldn’t be given a test for the Formula 1 seat.
Mick Schumacher’s situation in the pinnacle of motorsport has remained stuck since. Earlier, Formula One Management approved Cadillac’s entry on the grid in the 2026 season. This once again gives hope of his possible return. While the team is set to join the grid as the eleventh team, there has been no confirmation from them on the drivers. But, Schumacher is thought to be an eligible candidate for the seat.
