Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert feels that Lance Stroll is performing better than Fernando Alonso currently at Aston Martin. Both drivers have been racing together since the 2023 season, and Alonso has almost always been at the top.

However, the situation is a little different this year. Stroll has managed to pull off more points than his 43-year-old teammate after the first ten races. While there are a number of reasons for this, including the car’s reliability and inconsistent performance, Herbert feels Stroll is the better-performing one in the team currently. When he was recently asked about the drivers’ performances, he said:

“The one who has more points is Lance,” Herbert said, when asked who was performing better at AM.

However, Fernando Alonso isn’t the one to blame for this performance. Both drivers have had only two finishes in points this year. Lance Stroll scored points in Bahrain and China. Interestingly, Alonso had retired from both races, following a crash in Bahrain and a car issue in the other race.

This was also the first time in his career that he did not score any points in any of the inital races. It wasn’t until his home race in Barcelona that Fernando Alonso marked a P9 finish to score his first points this year. He finished P7 once again in Canada. Stroll, meanwhile, did not participate in Barcelona and finished P17 in Canada.

Stroll currently has 14 points in his bag; meanwhile, Alonso has eight. But with more than half of the season still left to run, the team is expected to perform better with upgrades.

Fernando Alonso feels McLaren could have more competition for the title later in the season

McLaren has dominated the 2025 F1 season so far. The team has managed to win seven races so far and has a comfortable lead in the Constructors’ Championship. Oscar Piastri has had the upper hand with five victories. While the image for the championship looks pretty much clear right now, Fernando Alonso warned that the pecking order could change in the season’s second half.

“I think I was expecting a very tight fight. It’s true that it’s a very tight field, but maybe not so much the number one car, the McLaren, is a little bit ahead of everyone,” he told the media.

“So yes, maybe surprising, but the championship is long. We saw in the last two seasons that it’s not guaranteed that the second half of the season the same team will dominate. First half, yes McLaren dominated. The second, we will see, but for sure, they are the reference for everyone,” he added.

While Alonso himself is pretty far from a championship battle currently, there is a possibility for him next year. The regulations are changing, and it is expected to shake the grid up. Aston Martin signed Adrian Newey earlier, who is already working on the team’s 2026 car. Moreover, they also partnered with Honda, which is known for supplying powerful and reliable engines. This could give the team the upper hand.
