George Russell is one of the more consistent drivers on the current F1 grid. Driving for Mercedes since the 2022 season, the Briton has managed to win three races. He has also been on the podium another 15 times.
His skills are immaculate enough to make him a strong contender for the World Championship if given a strong car. He became the team’s senior driver after his former teammate, Lewis Hamilton, left the squad to join Ferrari this year.
Russell was in the spotlight earlier this year after his clip from Netflix: Drive to Survive went viral on social media. The short clip was from Miami in 2024, where he was seemingly excited to meet the current US President, Donald Trump. This raises the question: Is George Russell a Trump supporter?
While most F1 drivers are not very outspoken about their political inclination, this one moment from the Mercedes driver earned him quite some heat on social media.
“What’s going on over there?”, asked Russell, hearing the crowd cheer in the background,” Russell said [via Sportskeeda].
“It’s Trump? Oh my god, I really wanna see him.” he added.
However, none of this clarifies Russell’s political opinion. Like many drivers, he Russell has kept his political views private to himself. This was the only moment that caught some traction on social media.
Rest, Russell has once again been driving competitively this year, keeping Mercedes within the top five on the grid. His rookie teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, has also been delivering impressive results and helping the team to remain competitive within the top order.
George Russell targets Max Verstappen’s “deliberate” move during Spanish GP
A late safety car restart during the 2025 Spanish GP saw Max Verstappen and George Russell battling each other for the final podium place. In what was deemed to be an unfair overtake on turn one, Verstappen had to give his place back to Russell. While he sounded frustrated on the radio, he seemed to give back the place on the approach to turn four.
However, as George Russell closed in on him, Verstappen moved back on the racing line, and the two made contact. Speaking after the race, the Briton claimed that the move seemed to be “deliberate.”
“It felt very deliberate, to be honest,” Russell said (via RacingNews365). “It’s something that I’ve seen numerous times in sim racing, and iRacing – never have I seen it in an F1 race. That was something new. It’s a bit of a shame because Max is clearly one of the best drivers in the world – but maneuvers like that are just totally unnecessary and sort of let him down.”
Following the incident, the FIA gave Max Verstappen a 10-second time penalty. This dropped him to P10 in the final race results. George Russell, meanwhile, took home a P4 finish, making a strong recovery after a P11 finish in Monaco earlier.
