Alex Albon has warned Williams of repeating the same mistake as Austria. He fears a disastrous weekend for the team at the British GP. The Thai driver has suffered a terminal issue in the last three races, leading to retirement on all occasions.
Alex Albon fears Williams may be putting too much pressure on their power units. The Mercedes engine in the back of his car has blown up three races in a row. While reliability has been somewhat of an issue for the Mercedes PU in 2025, no other team with the same engines has suffered such recurring problems.
After a double-DNF for himself and his teammate Carlos Sainz in Austria, Albon now fears that if Williams does not fix their issues going into the team’s home race at Silverstone, it would be disastrous.
“It feels like Canada. Same engine and, the same symptoms. We’re not just losing points, we’re also losing important test kilometers,” said Albon. [via f1oversteer.com]
“And if it hits our home track at Silverstone, it would be a disaster,” he added.
Williams is expected to do well at Silverstone. Their car suits the track’s characteristics, and they have had positive results there in 2023 and 2024 with Albon. But the team from Grove was also expected to do well in Canada and Austria. Both weekends turned out to be disastrous for the team.
Albon was on a brilliant point-scoring streak before the Spanish GP. He has not even been able to finish a race since. He will be hoping that his luck turns around at the British GP. Silverstone is also one of Albon’s home races in a sense since the 29-year-old was born and raised in the UK.
Alex Albon reflects on the idea of Thailand hosting an F1 event
Alex Albon has claimed that the possibility of Thailand hosting an F1 Grand Prix is “becoming more and more real”. The British-born driver races under the Thai flag, honoring his mother’s heritage. Hence, a Thailand-based Grand Prix would be his home race.
Thailand is reportedly seeking a chance to bring F1 to their country shortly. Representatives from the Asian country’s government have also had talks with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali already.
Albon was recently asked in the media about the potential of seeing Thailand host an F1 race. The Williams driver seemed excited about the idea.
“It looks like it’s becoming more and more real. Thailand is quite big with the tourism industry and F1 fits their narrative perfectly. I do think it’s going to be really good for the country. It seems like they are taking it very seriously as well,” said Albon. [via RacingNews365]
“They’ve come to a lot of races and it’s all going forward. There’s not been any setbacks so far, which is very important. I can’t really say so much. But everything I’ve seen, the circuit, the initial plans, it all looks really promising,” he added.
Albon knows more than he is letting on in the media. This is unsurprising, as the only Thai driver on the grid will have a huge influence on a potential bid.
