F1 is a raging ground for young blood. Every year, rookies from the junior series join the grid. Although a lot of them might still not be of legal age to drive a car on public roads, they are given the responsibility of handling machines capable of generating 1000 horsepower and going down at over 210 mph (337 kph).
The 2025 season witnessed six rookie drivers making their full-time debut on the grid. The most popular one of the lot was Andrea Kimi Antonelli. The 18-year-old Italian crushed his competition in the junior series and earned a deal with Mercedes as he competed in his debut Formula 2 season. Antonelli is also the youngest driver on the grid currently, however, he lost the chance to clinch the record to become the youngest driver to win an F1 race.
Throughout F1’s history, the sport has witnessed young winners, but who were the youngest ones to ever take the checkered flag?
Taking a look at the youngest F1 race winners in history
It typically takes even the most promising drivers quite some time to clinch their first victory in Formula 1. However, some had it early throughout the years.
#7 Lewis Hamilton
Hamilton debuted on the F1 grid with McLaren back in 2007. Right on his debut, he scored five consecutive podiums. In just his sixth race, Lewis Hamilton clinched his maiden victory in Canada. He was only 22 years, five months, and three days old at the time. However, that age has significantly decreased now.
#6 Bruce McLaren
McLaren’s founder, Bruce McLaren, also had a celebrated career in racing. In his Formula 1 stint, he managed to bring home his maiden victory in the US in 1959. At just 22 years, three months, and twelve days, he was the youngest winner in the sport at the time.
#5 Troy Ruttman
Ruttman wasn’t a full-time Formula 1 driver, however, he did run the 1952 Indianapolis 500. At the time, the prestigious event was part of the Formula 1 World Championship. Not only did he participate, but he also won, taking the checkered flag at the end of the 200th lap. He was 22 years, 02 months, and 19 days old at the time.
Interestingly enough, he also held the title for being the youngest F1 debutant two years ago in the same event.
#4 Fernando Alonso
The Spaniard is currently the oldest driver on the grid. However, he is also one of the youngest race winners in the sport’s history. At just 22 years and 26 days old, Alonso clinched a victory in Hungary, in 2003. This was also his debut season with Renault.
#3 Charles Leclerc
The Monegasque debuted with Sauber in 2018, and Ferrari signed him for the next season. Using the Prancing Horse’s straight-line advantage to the maximum, Leclerc clinched his maiden win in Belgium. He was 21 years, 10 months, and 16 days at the time. A consecutive victory at Monza soon followed.
#2 Sebastian Vettel
The four-time F1 World Champion held the record for the youngest race winner for a long time. At just 21 years, 2 months, and 11 days, he had clinched victory at Monza in 2008 for Toro Rosso. This was a major achievement for the team, which followed his signing to Red Bull Racing.
#1 Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen dominated the grid between 2021 and 2024, clinching four consecutive World Championships. He had been a promising driver since his debut, and clinched his maiden win in his first race with Red Bull Racing. He was only 18 years, 07 months, and 15 days old when he achieved this in Spain, 2016.
While the Dutchman did set quite a benchmark for the generations to come, there is a considerable shift in the average driver age on the grid. There might possibly be another driver in the future who would break the record and become the youngest F1 winner. Till then, however, it is Verstappen who tops the sheet.
