5 father-son duo in F1 who ended up having successful careers

F1 driver Max Verstappen and father Jos Verstappen

Over the course of the 75-year history of F1, there have been more than a few instances of racing being in a driver’s blood. The sport has been around long enough to see the careers of first and second-generation racers. In some cases, the father’s legacy has been too challenging to beat. In others, the son has achieved new heights. The father-son duos have all been associated with some of the most famous names in this motorsport. Verstappen, Schumacher, Villeneuve, and Hill are only four of the five on our list will explore.

5. Michael Schumacher and Mick Schumacher

During his tenure in F1, Michael Schumacher won a record-breaking seven world championship titles. He also had 91 race wins and 155 podiums. Looking at just the first two full seasons of his career from 1992 to 1993, he had won two races. (And?)

(Anymore context? Add something to connect the two’s career.)

While Mick’s career was not as glamorous as his father’s, he did impress in his two seasons at Haas. Mick Schumacher drove for the American outfit in 2021 and 2022. The young Schumacher scored a total of 12 points over the course of the two years. It might not seem impressive, but given Haas’ dreadful car, it was not a bad achievement. He finished his first season in 19th and his second in 16th in the drivers’ standings.

4. Jos Verstappen and Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen has been one of the most consistent drivers since his F1 debut. He has won four consecutive championships, along with 53 of his 65 career wins. The reigning world champion might have raised the Verstappen name to glory, but he is a second-generation driver nonetheless. His father, Jos Verstappen, raced in F1 from 1994 to 2003. During his time in the sport, Jos’ strongest season was his first. He scored two podiums for Benetton Ford and went on to finish 10th in the standings.

3. Gilles Villeneuve and Jacques Villeneuve

Gilles Villeneuve is one of the most iconic drivers in the history of F1. He made his debut in 1977 and raced until his death at the Belgian Grand Prix in 1982. During that time, he secured six wins and a runner-up finish in the standings in 1979. Coming into the sport 14 years later was his son, Jacques Villeneuve. While his father may have a track named after him, it was the young Villeneuve who went home with a title in 1997. He scored 11 wins and 19 podiums in his first two seasons in the sport. He would only achieve four more podiums after that and never got close to another title. Jacques retired from F1 in 2006.

2. Keke Rosberg and Nico Rosberg

Former Mercedes star Nico Rosberg and his father Keke is one of the only two father-son pairings in the history of the sport to have both win the drivers championship. Keke Rosberg scored his championship win in 1982, driving for the Williams team. In 1985, he scored his second-best finish of third in the standings, and he won five races in total. His son, Nico Rosberg, achieved his title success in 2016, racing for Mercedes. That was his final season in the sport, by which time he had won 23 races and also achieved runner-up finishes in the standings back-to-back in 2014 and 2015.

1. Graham Hill and Damon Hill

Arguably the most successful father-son pairing in F1’s history, Graham and Damon Hill have a total of three championships between them. Graham has two, and his son has one. The senior Hill scored his titles in 1962 and 1968, driving for the Owen Racing Organization and Lotus. He also achieved 14 wins and 36 podiums in total. Meanwhile, his son Damon scored his title in his fourth full season in the sport, driving for Williams. He secured 22 race wins and 42 podiums. He did so in a career that lasted eight seasons as compared to his father’s 18. Graham Hill also finished runner-up in the standings thrice (1963-1965), while his son did it twice (1994, 1995).
